Suit Up! The Do's and Don'ts

May 2, 2016

We have all heard the sayings “dress for success” or “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” from every networking event we’ve ever attended.  What we might not always believe is that these speakers know what they are talking about.  Everyone knows that the first impression you have of a person is their outer appearance. I know I know this is very vain, however it’s the world we live in (already getting pretty deep).  This is why it is crucial to put your best foot forward when it comes to dressing for success.  Below are a few style tips and pointers when it comes to looking like the future CEO you all want to be!

Professional Make Up

When it comes to make up ladies, Coco Channel says it best “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous”.  This means keep it simple and natural in the work place.  I would recommend simple winged eyeliner and a natural lip colour (save the daring lipsticks and smoky eyes for a night out).  This doesn’t mean that you can not rock a red or pink lip in the office, just keep in mind that you want to keep the rest of your make up look neutral.  Here are some pictures to get some inspiration!

Staple Pieces

Now that your beautiful make up is done, what to wear? I always find it easier to pick out your outfit for the next day before you go to bed, a girl needs her beauty sleep after all! So make sure you search through your closet and everything is ironed before you hit the sheets.  When it comes to pulling together an outfit for work you can really have a lot of fun with it.  All you need are some staple pieces to get started.

Staple pieces within your professional wardrobe should be well fitted and tailored as these pieces will be the foundation.  The first piece is a blazer, the difference between a well fitting blazer and an ill fitting one is like night and day.  So spend the extra cash to make this piece fit perfectly.

The second set that will round out your wardrobe with are dresses.  Dresses are an easy one-piece outfit that requires little thinking during your busy work week.  Look for dresses that have thicker straps as most companies have strict dress codes.  Finally the last staple piece that will constantly be reached for in your closet is a pair of nude heels.  Nude heels honestly go with everything, so if you are going to invest in a par of heels go with a nude or blush colour.

Don’t Worry We Didn’t Forget About You Men!

Men’s fashion is obviously not my forte, however one can pull inspiration from “Suits” Harvey Specter.  Just as I said before, never underestimate the power of a great fitting suit.  Many people make mistakes of not getting their suits tailored, and believe me it is worth the extra money.  Suits are investment pieces, they can be worn many times with different shirt and tie combinations to make a whole new outfit.

When looking for your next suit purchase, the basic colours to start with would be black, navy, and grey.  After that it’s up to the shirts and ties to change the outfit to fit your style personality.  Pinterest can be your new best friend as it’s a great way to search different outfit looks with the suit colours you already have.

In the end, your professional style is a powerful way to build your personal brand. If you stay true to yourself and have fun with it you will definitely suit up for success!
