Who Am I?
First…a brief introduction: I am currently in my 5th year in Marketing Management. I have been involved with Guelph DECA for four years now. I did DECA in my grade 12 year of high school but took a break in first year. Come second year, I was able to convince one friend (my current co-prez) to come out and join me. Last semester I was studying at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. For anyone debating going on an exchange, GO! Just go! Do whatever it takes to go. Honestly, it has been the most amazing experience of my life! It may have delayed my graduation date, but if I didn’t go I would have lost out on so many amazing experiences that I would not be able to get come graduation and entering a career. I also would not have been able to be DECA Co-President this year.
What is DECA?
This is a question I get asked on the regular by fellow Gryphons, friends and family. What I tell them is that it is Canada’s LARGEST Undergraduate Student Association. It is a business case competition that allows you to build your network, enhance your presentation skills and think critically. We compete against other colleges and universities in an array of different categories from Retail Management to Finance and everything in between.
Not to sound cheesy, but honestly DECA has been a large part of my university life and has enhanced it for the better. I have made some of my closest friends and made existing friendships even stronger. You meet like-minded individuals who are looking to grow their business knowledge and also their network. With holding events like our Internal Case Competition to Trivia nights, DECA is able to provide both social and school related events to help in both areas. These events are super interactive, which means you get to make those connections with your fellow peers from an array of different majors. This is something that makes DECA so unique - it is NOT restricted to business students. Any major can join, this gives us diversity and different perspectives on how to approach the problems we are faced with in the cases.
The executive team and I have been working extremely hard to improve DECA U Guelph and take it to new heights. We have a lot more events and more tools for training to give our delegates the best opportunity to win at Provincials. As well, there will be more interaction on social media and in person. If you ever see myself or a member of the team on campus, don’t be afraid to stop and say hi or ask a question. If you are hesitant at all, don’t be! DECA will truly enhance your business mind and provide you with so much more confidence with public speaking, networking and is all around just a good time!
How do I get involved?
If you are looking to get involved in the business community here at Guelph, then I would recommend 1) coming to our Season Premier Event on September 12th at 5:30 pm in UC 103 and 2) coming to our Info Sessions on September 20th and 21st. This way if you are at all hesitant, the executive team and myself will be there to answer any of your questions.
When do I get started?
As I just mentioned, we have our first event this coming Monday as well as Info nights. However, the delegate fee needs to be paid by October 1st! Hope everyone is as excited for the upcoming DECA year as I am ☺
