As a first year at the University of Guelph, I had the privilege to become the first-year representative at DECAU Guelph. I remember the first meeting in September; all of the execs were discussing what charity we should choose for our upcoming Apartment 58 event. That was the moment I made my first contribution by suggesting Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Make A Wish is a wish granting organization, that seeks to brighten the hopes and dreams of a child with life threating condition and their family. Personally, I cannot imagine the difficulties, struggles and obstacles families in these situations face. For the child especially, regular visits to the hospital, being limited and restricted to activities, and the fatigue and symptoms that come from medication is truly a challenge day in and day out.
DECA’s sponsor child is Annika. She is a 7-year-old girl, living with a congenital heart disease. She absolutely loves to play with her baby dolls, so it is no surprise that her favourite day was when her little baby brother was born. Annika enjoys playing on her iPad and watching YouTube videos in her spare time! Her favourite food is pizza and cake! Annika's most cherished wish is to go to Walt Disney World® Resort and meet up with her best friend Savannah!
From our “58 Wishes for Make-A-Wish” event, we were able to double our fundraising goal and raise $1200! This money will go to helping Annika’s Disney dream come true, a perfect gift for her and her family right before Christmas. Without doubt, I am filled with joy and couldn’t have thought of a better way to contribute to the exec team. Thank you to everyone who helped plan, organize and execute a fantastic night. Most importantly, thank you to everyone for coming, and remember that because of you, we are making someone’s wish a reality.
