Hello DECA U Guelph Delegates!
I’m Tim, one of your 2018-19 DECA U Guelph co-presidents. First, on behalf of Jacqueline and myself, I would like to welcome you to our 2018-19 DECA U Guelph blog! Throughout the summer and fall semester, you will get a chance to meet everyone on our fantastic team, with topics ranging from academics to extracurriculars and even valuable advice on job searching!
Who Am I?
My experience with DECA started when I was in high school. I was immediately hooked, and I remember constantly having to beg my parents to let me stay late every Wednesday so that I could go through cases. The hard work eventually paid off, as I was able to serve as an executive twice and even qualify to compete at Internationals in Atlanta, Georgia. When I got to university I was surprised to learn that the University of Guelph had a DECA chapter as well. I decided to join as a delegate in first year before moving on to the roles of Director of Training and Vice-President of Delegate Experience.
What is DECA?
DECA U Guelph is a chapter of DECA U Ontario, a case-competition that gives post-secondary students the opportunity to develop their professional skills beyond the classroom. Delegates are presented with a business problem in a variety of categories and challenged to present a solution within a specified time period. Students can participate individually or in teams and are mentored by peers in weekly training sessions.
Next, delegates are given the opportunity to attend various competitions throughout the year. This past January, the Guelph chapter proudly received a school record 15 medals at the DECA U Ontario Provincial case competition. And in April, DECA U Guelph was honored to receive two- top ten finishes from both delegates that attended the DECA International Career Development (ICDC) Conference held in Washington, D.C. Our delegates received awards including top ten overall for Accounting and third place overall in Human Resource Management category.
